Information on matts

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 - If your dog is heavily matted, I can only work on brushing them for 15 minutes maximum, any longer than this your dog may feel discomfort and pain.

Matts form when the hair becomes tangled and wraps around itself causing tight clumps close to the skin. They are normally found around the neck where collar sits or where the harness is, under the armpits, backs of the legs and under chin. When they start to form and are not brushed out, the fur continues to get trapped and tighter against the skin making it uncomfortable for your dog. In worst cases, the matt may cut off circulation and cause haematomas leading to distress for the dog.

Regular brushing is so important especially the curly coat breeds. If your dog comes for a groom with matts, I will do my best to brush them out but in severe cases, the only option would be to clip very short. This may be discussed prior to the grooming session and you can rest assured that a great deal of care is taken to make sure your dog is comfortable.
